ABOUT SAM

He is a prolific artist. He draws and paints most days. His work ranges from beautiful landscapes, portraits and scenes depicting the stress of lockdown, and political pieces that speak about his refugee status and longing for his homeland. 

He showed me much of his work and I was particularly struck by his miniature tableaus, constructed in a cardboard box with simple text and music playing underneath. I asked him if I could make one under his instruction. ‘The Man with his heart on the right side’ is the result of that collaboration.

Also included is a portrait of a homeless person, with the invitation to fill in your needs. ‘You...what are your needs?’

I enjoyed the way that Sam gave meticulous instructions of how to make one of his pieces and ‘How to make your own figure’ is a reflection of that.
